AARP Community Challenge — Art Crosswalk-ing Tour

This project was completed with an AARP Community Challenge Grant in my role as Councilperson for the Town of Milton.

With this generous grant and heaps of community support and over 125 volunteers, 12 original art crosswalks were installed throughout the Town of Milton DE to educate drivers on the locations of some of our most highly utilized crosswalks and to promote walking as a transportation mode.

I worked with 12 artists to create, scale and format their artwork to fit within the standard MUTCD crosswalk markings, calculated paint volumes, gathered supplies and coordinated the installation of each crosswalk on its painting day.
Each installation took an average of 12 hours; from snapping out the art grid at first light, chalking the design, taping out the painting areas to create a giant paint-by-number for our volunteers, and then applying 4 coats of paint onto the asphalt, often wrapping up at dusk.
